Low-latency capabilities have been present in previous standards, but Release 16 is the first iteration in which scheduling efficiency and network capacity are fully specified. Release 16 will focus on the ecosystem, end-to-end network orchestration and may also enhance the focus on more key network parameters, rather than capacity and top speeds only.

Apostolos (Tolis) Papathanassiou is a Senior Principal Engineer with the Next Generation and Standards (NGS) organization of the Intel Technology, Systems Architecture & Client Group (TCSG) and he is responsible for LTE and 5G PHY and MAC standardization activities in 3GPP. He recently served for more than two years as the 5GAA Working Group 4 (Standards and Spectrum) Chairman and WWRF (Wireless World Research Forum) Steering Board member. He has more than 50 scientific contributions to international journals, conferences, and books since 1994, more than 35 awarded patents in 3G (TDSCDMA and WCDMA), 4G (WiMAX, LTE), 5G and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11a/g/n) wireless communications systems since 1996, and more than 100 contributions to wireless standardization bodies such as 3GPP, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16, and WiMAX Forum since 1999. Previously at Intel, he led multiple standardization efforts in ITU-R and IEEE 802.16/WiMAX Forum.

Andrew is part of the Next Generation and Standards (NGS) group at Intel, leading 5G End-to-End network architecture and execution across multiple business segments and product organizations. Previously, Andrew was CTO at Radisys, after having served as the company’s vice president of platform engineering. His technology focus areas have spanned access and core networks, network functions virtualization, SDN controlled data plane solutions, media processing, and compute, storage and switching infrastructure. He has more than 20 years of experience in networking and computer systems architecture and design. Andrew was the co-founder of Oresis Communications, a start-up focused on converged voice and data packet switching systems. His communications career started at ADC Kentrox, with a focus on data plane processing in the packet/cell access space.
