Agenda

LPWAN 2.0: The Next Generation of IoT Networks
September 12, 2017 | 7:00am- 8:40am

The Internet of Things has no shortage of connections. A wide range of startups are offering Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) wireless connections across the country in an effort to break open the IoT opportunity. Similarly, established players like AT&T, Verizon, and others are answering that challenge with low-power versions of their own networks.

The result is a large and growing number of networking options for IoT customers, from governments to corporations. Street lights, power meters and other devices now have a range of network options to connect to, from LoRa to LTE M.

As IoT networks stretch from one corner of the country to the other, players are now looking at their next steps – a situation that raises the question: What’s next for the LPWAN space?

LPWAN 2.0 stands as the next phase of the market. Network providers will begin densifying and bolstering their networks, while at the same time working to sell more deeply into their target markets. Meantime, IoT solutions providers will be looking to create more horizontal applications instead of just siloed, single-use IoT services.

The next phase of the IoT is rapidly approaching, and this Fierce event will delve into what LPWAN 2.0 might mean for customers, providers and vendors.

Telecom Transformation: The Marriage of Open Source Software and 5G Networks
September 13, 2017 | 7:00am - 8:40am

The evolution to 5G network technology may well be the first major network migration in the cellular industry that is focused more on software than hardware. In the industry’s previous moves, from analogue to 2G, from 2G to 3G, and from 3G to 4G LTE, much of the heavy lifting involved physical upgrades to network antennas, base stations and air interfaces. And while that too may happen during the migration to 5G, it certainly won’t be where operators place most of their focus.

This time around, in 5G, software architectures promise to be just as important – perhaps more important – than the physical, hardware changes that will occur. And much of this software evolution will be conducted on open source platforms, the kind that powered much of the development in the internet and data center industries.

Thus, mobile network operators are facing not only a step change in the development of their networks, but also entirely new architectures and languages they must grasp before they will truly be able to take advantage of the promise of 5G.

This situation though raises a wide range of concerns, including what types of software platforms will be most important in 5G, how operators should expect to migrate their legacy services into a software environment, and how they can expect to evolve their operations into 5G – and beyond – in an open-source paradigm.

This Fierce event will delve into these issues and more during a no-holds-barred discussion among top executives in the space.
