The autonomous car continues to receive a substantial amount of interest from automakers, technology companies, regulators and others. After all, the notion that a computer could take on the laborious task of getting a motorist through a congested commute to work in the morning is a powerful selling point. And to be clear, the technology that must be brought to bear to achieve a self-driving car is substantial, to say the least. 

However, the vehicle-to-everything (V2X) space carries far more opportunities than simply getting workers through their morning commute. Indeed, V2X communications stretch across connections between vehicles and any other object or entity, be it infrastructure, devices, grids or other vehicles.

For example, shipping companies could reshape their entire business with autonomous trucking options. Cities could redesign their roads and grids to effectively shuttle residents through autonomous transport systems. And on-demand transport services like Uber and Lyft could well enable an eventual transition away from personal automobiles entirely.

And wireless companies, from carriers to vendors to others, could potentially play a driving role in the transportation sector of tomorrow. Already, players from across the wireless industry are working on services and platforms to enable the pieces that would have to be eventually connected to create a V2X environment.

Of course, there are a wide range of challenges arrayed against this space. Legislators, regulators and others would have to be brought on board. Disparate platforms from competing vendors would need to be aligned. And the networks of tomorrow would need to be able to handle the transportation system of tomorrow.
