As cord cutting catches fire and streaming video upends the traditional market for pay-TV services, many believed that sports content – with its rabid fans and real-time appeal – would remain immune to significant digital disruption. However, based on recent trends, it appears that even our great national pastimes could fall into the great disruptor that is the internet.

Yet this market upheaval could also open up significant opportunities. In an always-connected world, how might football fans follow their favorite teams in the off season? Are there opportunities to better connect communities of baseball aficionados during key games? And would hockey enthusiasts pay extra for a virtual reality stream from box seats at the playoffs?

It’s clear that sporting events provide a fundamentally different viewing experience than, say, scripted dramas. Nonetheless, it’s also clear that sports, like just about everything else, will be affected by the world’s new digital reality.
